Overview:

This intensive training program is designed for supervisors, safety professionals, and workers involved in the planning, executing, and supervising of trenching and excavation activities. As a “Trenching and Excavations Competent Person,” you will gain essential expertise in recognizing, evaluating, and controlling hazards inherent to trenching and excavation work. The course combines theoretical learning with practical applications to ensure participants are fully prepared to apply safety principles on the job site.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will:

• Understand Trenching and Excavation Hazards: Identify the various hazards associated with trenching and excavation work, including cave-ins, struck-by incidents, and hazardous atmospheres.
• Regulations and Standards: Master the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and other relevant regulations for trenching and excavation, focusing on OSHA 1926 Subpart P.
• Protective Systems: Learn about the different types of protective systems (sloping, shoring, shielding, and others) and the criteria for their design and use.
• Soil Analysis: Gain skills in classifying soil types and conducting soil tests to determine appropriate protective measures.
• Hazardous Atmosphere Evaluation: Understand how to evaluate and mitigate hazardous atmospheres within trenches and excavations.
• Inspections: Develop the ability to conduct pre-job inspections, identify potential hazards, and implement corrective actions before work begins and as conditions change.
• Emergency Response and Rescue Plans: Create effective emergency response and rescue procedures tailored to trenching and excavation scenarios.
• Practical Application: Engage in hands-on exercises, including soil classification, installation and removal of protective systems, and conducting safety inspections.
